The Rugby League World Cup : How it works

Rugby League World Cup Structure

As the world cup is a rugby league competition it couldn’t be straight forward, however it is much simpler than the play offs and the article comes equipped with a much more informative diagram than the one used for the how the playoffs works article.

So read on to find out how this years world cup will be laid out.

To start the tournament there are 3 different groups or pools if you prefer, suprisingly called Pool 1, Pool 2 and Pool 3.
Pool 1 basically includes all the good Rugby League nations and Pools 2 and 3 include the rest which were all sorted out through some qualifying games at some point. So the tournament start as follows.
 Pool 1  Pool 2  Pool 3
 Australia  France Tonga
 New Zealand  Fiji  Ireland
 England  Scotland  Samoa
Papau New Guinea

Each team gets the pleasure of playing each of the teams in it’s pool once and the results then sort out who goes through to the next round.
The top teams from pools 2 and 3 go into a Semi-Final Qualifier whilst the 2nd placed teams and 3rd placed teams from the two groups then play off in ranking games against each other. (I’m not sure if the ranking games are just for world cup purposes or general national ranking)
The winner of the semi final will then go on to play the team that finishes top of pool 1 whilst the bottom team from group 1 is out of the competition and teams 2 and 3 play off in the other semi final.
Then as is usual for a competition the winners of the semi finals play in the final, so at least something is normal.
You can see all of the world cup fixtures here at the official rugby league world cup site.
I’m not quite sure why there aren’t 3 groups of 4? I guess it’s maybe a financial thing or just to do with the fact that the last world cup wasn’t that great. I know the additional two teams wouldn’t be competitive but surely it’s good to have a nation represented in the competition anyway? Outside of Australia, New Zealand and England there isn’t anyone with a chance of winning anyway of course, and even then you’d be hard pushed to see either of those teams winning against the Aussies, but you never know.

Shit look-alikes : Peter Stirling and James Tolkan

Peter Stirling James Tolkan
“And if you screw up just this much, you’ll be flying a plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong!”
The famous line delivered by the man on the right, actor James Tolkan of Top Gun and also Back to the Future fame, and not by the bloke on the left, channel 9 commentator Peter Stirling. I can see how you’d get confused though.

NRL Grand Final 2008

Well that wasn’t what I was expecting. After the rubbish pre-game goings on (what was with drumming on BBQs?) the game kicked off and Manly pulled out the biggest grand final win since 1975 when Eastern Suburbs put 38 past St George and Melbourne turned up the first scoreless performance since Cronulla in 78. (I’m not a stat man I just read both of those from the NRL website)
So probably not the best day for the Storm but Manly looked every bit in control of the game, a great hat-trick from Michael Robertson and Steve Menzies played a record equalling 349th appearance as he retires from the game. You can watch it all above.

It’s now all eyes towards the world cup as the questions around the Australia squad are soon to be answered and the England train on squad welcomes those players who will come from the Leeds and Saints teams, there should be a few players there at least.
Oh and sadly tipping baby didn’t finish the season on a high having predicted a Melbourne win.

Super League Grand Final 2008

Well it was bound to happen, I say I’m gonna back Saints and they turn up all rubbish on the day. A poor performance from the Saints full of errors and lacking the usual confidence and control of the game. Coupled with a Leeds team who turned up determined and came up with a good performance on the day in the wet conditions and become only the second team to retain the Super League trophy.
Anyways all the Leeds fans can please themselves with this video from youtube (not sure about the music though).

Super League Grand Final 2008 – Squads announced

Leeds and Saints meet at Old Trafford this weekend in a rematch from last years grand final. You can watch all the tries from Leeds’ victory in the nice youtube video above.
The 19 man squads are listed after the click. The only change is that Leeds are without Kiwi fullback Brent Webb who has suffered a recurrance of a back injury. He hasn’t been replaced in the 19 man sqaud.
My money is on Saints this year but it promises to be a close game and my money was on Saints last year and that got me nowhere.
