The 300 club

Both hemispheres have seen players make the landmark of 300 top flight games in the past few weeks.

Saint’s hooker Keiron Cunningham became the second player to pass the 300 mark in Super League (Keith Senior currently on 322 games). However he did become the first player to pass the milestone with the same club having played with St Helens in Super League since 1996.

Considered by some to be one, if not the best, hookers in the modern game Cunningham has at least to my mind always had been an effective player, something reflected in his position as 7th all time top try scorer in the Super League era.

On the other side of the world the old man of New Zealand rugby league, Ruben Wiki, made his 300th NRL appearence a few weeks ago. Having announced his retirement at the end of the season Wiki is still making a large contribution to the Warriors season and he is apparently to blame for the outbreak of beard growth among the warriors players. Apparently in tribute to Wiki’s final season, which he started sporting a new beard, the rest of the guys decided to sport various degrees of facial fuzz as well. Something I’m quite keen on having a bit of a grizzly adams look myself at the moment.

It seems like Wiki has been around forever and you can listen to him speak about his achievement in an interview before his 300th game by clicking here : 3 news – Wiki 300.
